Dean Swahn Reflects on Immigration for National Immigrants Day

Dean Swahn
As National Immigrants Day unfolds, I reflect on my journey from Sweden to the United States and the profound impact it has had on my life and career. I feel so fortunate and grateful for my exciting journey. As the Dean of the Wellstar College of Health and Human Services, I interact with many faculty, staff, and students, many of whom are also immigrants or thought leaders regarding immigration and the health and well-being of immigrants.

Our dynamic, thriving, and fast-growing Wellstar College prepares students for high-demand health, healthcare, and wellness jobs. Many of the more than 6,000 students we serve are immigrants like me. Last year, Wellstar College had more than 1,000 international students representing over 70 countries.

My journey from Sweden to the US was a mix of daunting and exhilarating experiences. Leaving behind my family and all that was familiar, I stepped into the unknown, driven by a passion for education and a commitment to global health. The journey was not without its share of challenges鈥攏avigating a new educational system, adapting to cultural differences, and building a community from scratch. And, of course, decades ago, we didn鈥檛 have the internet or cell phones. However, these experiences have only deepened my resolve to support others who embark on similar paths and are also so closely linked to my passion for global health.

As a Dean and a Professor, I have the privilege of witnessing the unique and invaluable contributions immigrants bring to our educational institutions and society. Our students, hailing from diverse backgrounds, bring unique perspectives, rich cultural heritages, and a profound dedication to their studies. They not only enrich our classrooms with their unique experiences but also drive innovation in truly inspiring ways.

One of my role's most rewarding aspects is witnessing our immigrant students' resilience and determination. Many have overcome significant obstacles鈥攍inguistic barriers, financial constraints, or the challenges of adapting to a new country鈥攖o pursue their dreams of higher education and a career in health. Their stories are a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the boundless potential within each of us. In many ways, they and all our KSU students embrace the word 鈥淪crappy鈥 (the name of the KSU mascot) by being determined, spirited, and displaying great resilience.

During National Immigrants Day, we celebrate these stories and the countless contributions made to our communities. It is a time to acknowledge their hardships, celebrate their successes, and recognize the vibrant tapestry they weave into the fabric of our society.

As we honor National Immigrants Day, this campus embraces the importance of creating inclusive and supportive environments for all students. By fostering a culture of understanding and acceptance, we can ensure that every individual can thrive and achieve their fullest potential.

To all my fellow immigrants and to those who stand by them on their journeys, I want to express my deepest gratitude. Together, we are building a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone. Happy National Immigrants Day!
